Retroviral epidemics in Guinea-Bissau: HIV-1, HIV-2, and HTLV
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Studies of HIV in Guinea-Bissau began in 1987 estimating an HIV-2 prevalence of 9% in adults above 14 years in urban Bissau. No HIV-1 infection was found at that time. The first case of HIV-1 infection was identified in 1989, when one case of dual infection of HIV-1+HIV-2 was detected. Over the last 20 years the two viruses have shown a different pattern of spread in the country; the prevalence of HIV-2 seems to be stabilising or decreasing, while HIV-1 prevalence has been increasing gradually [208]. In contrast to neighbouring countries, Senegal and GuineaConakry, with a low HIV-1 prevalence (<1 and 1.5%, respectively), Guinea-Bissau has a prevalence comparable to the levels of the most affected countries in the sub-region (Côte d‘Ivoire, Nigeria and Mali) with an HIV-1 prevalence higher than 4%. HTLV-1 in rural Guinea-Bissau: prevalence, incidence and a continued association with HIV
Background: HTLV-1 is endemic in Guinea-Bissau, and the highest prevalence in the adult population (5.2%) was observed in a rural area, Caió, in 1990. HIV-1 and HIV-2 are both prevalent in this area as well. Cross-sectional associations have been reported for HTLV-1 with HIV infection, but the trends in prevalence of HTLV-1 and HIV associations are largely unknown, especially in Sub Saharan Afr...
متن کاملHigh sexual risk taking and diverging trends of HIV-1 and HIV-2 in the military of Guinea Bissau.
BACKGROUND HIV and other sexually transmitted infections are a growing problem in the military personnel of Africa, and information about this problem in Guinea-Bissau is lacking. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and trends of the HIV epidemics in the military forces of Guinea Bissau and to explore possible risk factors for HIV infection. METHODOLOGY Repeated cross-sect...
متن کاملCohort Profile: The Bissau HIV Cohort-a cohort of HIV-1, HIV-2 and co-infected patients.
The West African country Guinea-Bissau is home to the world's highest prevalence of HIV-2, and its HIV-1 prevalence is rising. Other chronic viral infections like human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and hepatitis B virus are common as well. The Bissau HIV Cohort was started in 2007 to gain new insights into the overall effect of introducing antiretroviral treatment in a treatment-naïve p...
متن کاملHTLV-1 and HIV-2 Infection Are Associated with Increased Mortality in a Rural West African Community
BACKGROUND Survival of people with HIV-2 and HTLV-1 infection is better than that of HIV-1 infected people, but long-term follow-up data are rare. We compared mortality rates of HIV-1, HIV-2, and HTLV-1 infected subjects with those of retrovirus-uninfected people in a rural community in Guinea-Bissau. METHODS In 1990, 1997 and 2007, adult residents (aged ≥15 years) were interviewed, a blood s...
متن کاملQuantification of Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) provirus load in a rural West African population: no enhancement of human immunodeficiency virus type 2 pathogenesis, but HTLV-I provirus load relates to mortality.
Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) provirus load was examined in a cohort of a population in Guinea-Bissau among whom human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 2 is endemic. Geometric mean of HIV-2 RNA load among HTLV-I-coinfected subjects was significantly lower than that in subjects infected with HIV-2 alone (212 vs. 724 copies/mL; P=.02). Adjusted for age, sex, and HIV status, the risk...
